Just before the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, the Connecticut Open is held in New Haven at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale University, popularly known as "New England's Ultimate Tennis Experience." The gorgeous facilities rests on the castle-like University grounds and boast 22 outdoor courts, which is probably why they've been listed by USA Today as one of the top ten places to indulge your love for tennis in the country. The entire complex consists of 22 outdoor Deco II courts and eight indoor courts, as well as beautiful locker rooms, electronic score boards, and a large viewing area. Though used by Yale students, the courts are open to the community, and players can sign up for tennis lessons with the area pros.
The city itself is home to nearly forty additional courts, ranging from high-end private clubs to free neighborhood courts with a lovely small town vibe, like the facilities at Edgewood Park, just down the road from Cullman-Heyman. The park is brimming with New England trees that turn that classic burnt orange and gold in the fall, creating the perfect backdrop for a little outdoor exercise.
