What’s the best age to get kids into tennis?
I think kids can do group lesson starting at age 4. They need to
have fun with their friends and playing games before they
take private lessons. By age 7 or 8 they are ready to learn technique in a one-on-one situation. As a mom of 3 athletes, I encourage kids to try lots of sports until about age 12 when they have matured enough to see what they like and what they are willing to work at to be successful at 1 sport. They will also be mature enough to be able to assess what they are good at and where their talents lie.
When did you start playing?
I started playing tennis at age 12. My father was a top United States swimmer so I started swimming at a very young age, but found that my athletic ability was in tennis.

What’s the best age to get kids into tennis?
The speed of the ball and how fast a kid reacts to it is a major observation for the parent or pro when deciding the best time to introduce tennis to a kid. You want the kid to have fun first. If you don’t put too much pressure on the kid it’s OK to put a 4 or 5 year old out there. You have to have the right equipment; the smaller net, smaller racket, slower balls and a smaller court.
When did you start playing?
I started at 14. When I played college tennis and while teaching at summer camps I realized I had started 4 or 5 years later than my peers. They were all scholarship tennis players. I also took note that I was in the top half so I didn’t feel too bad I had played other sports, mainly football and baseball. I’m of the opinion that playing other sports especially when you’re young is beneficial. I’m even talking about talented kids that are going to take the game seriously and become excellent players.

I started playing around six or seven. We did not have the Quickstart format back then but the game was modernizing and getting away from wood racquets in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
